Bangor— It was a struggling afternoon for the University of Maine, Farmington. The Farmington Beavers visited the Husson College Eagles for a double header last Wednesday. The innings were strictly a battle back and forth. But in the end, it was the Eagles that were victorious in both games.
The opening ceremonies went off smoothly as the national anthem was played as the first game started off with a bang. The game was underway. In the top of the first inning, (#25) Kaitlyn Bartlett (photo below) from Chesterville, ME, hit a two homer on her first pitch. Eagles’ pitcher (#15) Nicole Sargent from Sullivan, ME, ended the top of the inning with the Beavers up 2-0.
All was quiet until the bottom of the second inning when Husson College came alive. After stopping the Beavers with a quick three outs, Husson started a back to back hitting spree. It began with a double by #11 Casssie Berry. Then second up at bat was Catcher (#1) Sarah Risser who hit it high and out, bringing Berry home for the Eagles’ first run of the game. The bottom of the inning Husson College gathered two other runs. The score at the end of the second inning the score was 3-2 Eagles in the lead.
With Husson College up four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, it looked like they were an uncatchable team. It wasn’t until in the top of the sixth, when Farmington started a comeback. After a bunt by (#9) Shannon Mitchell, the game suddenly changed directions quickly. Mitchell was able to run out the throw by hustling before the Eagles third baseman could get it to first base. The next hit, by the Beavers, was a high and long to left field. This was a single and advanced Mitchell to second base. Next up was (#14) Jackie Vo, she was told to make a sacrifice bunt, in switch she was able to hit the ball down the third base line. The Eagles third baseman (#3) Aimee Mortensen wasn’t to hang onto the ball. When Mortensen got to the ball and threw it to first base, for the attempt at an out, Mitchell, like lightening, ran through third and then home sliding safe. It was then a double by (#7) Jamiee Knowles that brought the score 6-5 Husson. Soon after this hit the inning ended.
That didn’t stop Husson from giving any leeway. In the bottom of the sixth, Husson gained another two runs and shut down the Farmington’s hitting rally in the top of the seventh. Eagles won 8-5.
This reporter was unable to stay for the second game of the double header, but would like to inform readers that Husson College won a that next game.
